Lightning Surge Testing

Lightning surge test on surge arrestor or lightning protection device is performed to measure the let-through voltage. The standard to perform lightning surge test are :

1.      IEEE standard for Category A, B and C testing.

2.     ITU-T standard for telephone and data line surge protection device testing.

The value of lightning surge that will be used for the testing are as follows :

1.      ITU-T K.20 = 6kV 10/700us

2.      ITU-T K.21 = 4kV 10/700us

3.      Cat A = 6kV Ringwave

4.      Cat B = 6kV, 3kA Combination Wave

5.      Cat C = 20kV 10kA Combination Wave

The lightning surge equipment that can be used are :

1.     Schaffner surge generator

2.     Haefely surge generator

3.     Decoupling unit

4.     Le-Croy digital oscilloscope

5.     High Voltage Probe

The let-through voltage depend on the type of surge protection device. The let-through voltage can range from 10V to 1500V.

Type of products that can be tested are :

1. Surge protector for telephone line
2. Single Line Phone
3. Fixed SMS Phone
4. Gas Tube and Gas Arrestor product
5. Single Phase Power Protector product
6. Three Phase Power Protector product
7. Auto-Reset Power Protector product
8. Power Adapter (240VAC convert to 9-20VDC)
